At St Bega’s Catholic Primary School we want to engage, inspire and challenge pupils when working with Art. We want to equip them with knowledge and skills that will encourage them to explore, experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. We want the children’s experiences to be culturally rich, in that they are exposed to Artists and Art, both modern and from History, that they would not normally be exposed to. We want the children to enjoy art and be comfortable using art as a means to express themselves.
Children will follow a program of progressive skills that are built upon and revisited at regular opportunities throughout their time at St Bega’s. Children will experience real life objects as a stimulus for art and design activities and staff will provide opportunities for children to unpick the stimulus to allow the children to fully explore what it is about.
Different Artists and artistic techniques will be explored and modelled progressively as the children move through the school. It will cover a broad range of Artists and techniques which will provide a rich knowledge of artistic vocabulary, as well as an understanding of the historical and cultural development of different art forms.
The activities, where necessary, will be differentiated to ensure all pupils can access the tasks and have an appropriate level of challenge.
School visitors and trips are used, where appropriate to enhance the pupils’ understanding and skills further.
Children will leave St Bega’s with a rich and broad awareness of Art and Design. They will have used, and be aware of how they can use, a range of artistic methods and techniques to express their own feelings and emotions, understanding where the technique they are using, originated. The children will be able to analyse their own work as well as giving their opinion on the work of others.
