St Bega’s is a Roman Catholic primary school with ages ranging from 3 to 11 years. Our Early Years (Nursery and Reception) follow the statutory Early Years Curriculum. Years 1 to 6 follow the new statutory 2014 National Curriculum in the core and foundation subjects. Running alongside these documents, we use the Cornerstones Curriculum to ignite creativity in our children and bring their learning to life. Our aim is for all of our children to have a thirst for knowledge and a love of learning.
Teaching of Reading and Spelling
In Early Years and Year 1 children follow the Letters and sounds programme to teach reading and spelling. This is a daily systematic synthetic phonic approach in which children continually revise and review what has been learnt. Children access the Oxford Reading Tree Scheme and this supports the Letters and Sounds programme.
From Year 2 onwards phonics are revised at speed whilst new spelling patterns are introduced.
