Our Reception Setting

In addition to Religious Education, Phonics, T4W and Outdoor learning, the Reception class daily timetable is carefully structured so that children have a balance of dedicated whole class teaching input in the specific and prime areas of learning with the EYFS and Carousel time. Carousel time, which is referred to in class as ‘pop off’ time takes place on both a morning and afternoon session. During the sessions children access, on a rota system, five different planned activities. Three of the morning activities are adult directed with the other two activities being adult initiated. Whereas during the afternoon session, two of the activities are adult directed, the other three are a combination of both adult and child-initiated activities and are deliberately flexible so that our children’s interest can be incorporated into the curriculum.

In Reception, children’s interests, learning and progress are exhibited and demonstrated in a range of ways which include:

  • Classroom displays.
  • Class Learning Journey Floor Book
  • Class PSED book.
  • Class People who help us book.
  • Class CAFOD A-Z Global Learning Book.
  • Class Collective Worship Book.
  • Individual electronic folders which include videos, photographs and observational evidence
  • The following exercise books – TW4, Literacy Skills, RE, Letter Formation, Spelling and Mathematics.
  • Seesaw Home Learning Portal

Finally, (pre–covid) children in the Reception class also have discrete Physical Education lessons. These sessions are carried in the school hall where focus skills are taught and developed as well as providing the children with the opportunity to develop their self-help skills.
