Phonics in Early Years

In both Nursery and Reception, phonics is taught in groups of no more than 10 in dedicated and differentiated daily phonic sessions. Aspects of Letters and Sounds, Jolly Phonics and Letterland are combined so as to deliver a phonic approach that supports different learning styles.

Additionally, Bega’s Blue Star Phonics is delivered daily in both Nursery and Reception and is a whole class approach which is currently exclusive to the Early Years. In Nursery this involves a ‘Sound of the Week’ focus where Jolly Phonics and Letterland resources facilitate the learning of the phoneme. Whilst in Reception, rapid daily sessions are dedicated to showing and practising phoneme flash cards, decodable words, tricky words and alien words.

A feature of our recovery curriculum is that all children in the Reception class complete a daily adult directed phonic activity during the morning session.
