Writing in Early Years

In line with our Talk for Write (T4W) initiative, both Nursery and Reception use the whole school half termly T4W genres as a basis from which we plan our topics and class texts. For example, when the focus genre is “A Wishing Tale”, the class text in Reception is ‘How to Catch a Star’ and in Nursery is the nursery rhyme ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, with the long-term topic being based around the theme of stars but again with flexibility, as always, remaining a given.

T4W is also used as an additional approach in the development of skills in other areas of learning within the EYFS which include: Communication and Language, Literacy, Personal, Social and Emotional Development and Expressive Arts and Design.

Additionally, in order to provide meaningful learning experiences, whenever possible, local theatre visits are planned in which our children able to watch adaptations of the focus text come to life. Past theatre visits have included Dear Zoo (letter), Room on the Broom (journey story) and We’re Going on a Bear Hunt (non-chronological report).
